Course Description

COG599 Scientific Writing and Presentation in English

Aims:
- improving students' skills for study in the medium of the English language;
- preparing students for using the English language for research purposes;
- equipping students with skills of successful presentation techniques.

Objectives:
On completion of the course students should be able to:
- read general psychology and/or cognitive science texts with ease;
- use basic terminology in psychology and/or cognitive science;
- present psychology and/or cognitive science orally;
- present psychology and/or cognitive science in written form.

Learning strategies:
Reading, listening, speaking and writing tasks in English for the purposes of presentation of from psychology and cognitive science.

Overall duration and format:
One-semester course (15 weeks) with 2 hours of seminars weekly. Homework assignments. Oral presentations.

Main Topics:
The specific topics and texts of the course are determined each semester depending on the background, needs and academic goals of the student group. Some topics from recent semesters include:
- Introduction into psychological terminology.
- International education in psychology.
- Main areas in psychology.
- Main areas of research in cognitive science.
- Cognitive psychology.
- Neuropsychology.
- Philosophy of cognitive science.
- Cognitive Modelling.
- Language and cognition.
- Experimental psychology. Abstract reading and writing.
- Psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis. Other kinds of psychotherapy.
- Cross-cultural psychology - non-verbal communication.
- Social psychology. Relationships, stages in relationships.
- Theories of emotion. Interdisciplinary data.

Assessment:
Either: (a) test; (b) oral presentation; (c) written paper.
Or: (a) review; (b) written paper/essay; (c) oral presentation at a student conference.
